Coaching with a purpose.... finally!
I have been asked the question.... why do you coach? so many times over my 16 years of being a head basketball coach. For about 15 years my answer seemed to really be focused around me because I would always answer with "I" statements. For example, I would say because "I'm" competitive, "I" love to win, or "I" enjoy seeing kids grow. My answer to this question now is drastically different because I now am a Christian coach and not a coach who is Christian. I answer that question now by saying I coach because I love kids, I love seeing kids develop character while learning how to play basketball.
The difference between being a Christian coach versus a coach who might be a Christian is being intentional with your actions. I am intentional with my actions as a Christian coach. I intentionally care for my players. I intentionally show them love. I share stories around them about FCA summer camp in Flagstaff. The other day, I intentionally dropped my FCA athlete's bible into a crowd of athletes who were talking inappropriately. After I picked up my bible, I asked the kid who was talking inappropriately if he could hold the bible while I shook everyone's hand and then gave him a handshake as well and then said, hey let me get that bible back unless you need to hold it today?
Being a Christian coach, in my opinion, only strengthens the bond between players, coaches and parents. I talk as much as possible (being intentional) about my activities that are centered around Christ, whether it is a Thursday morning coaches bible study story or an invite to CCV to hear amazing speakers talk about good stuff.
Knowing your purpose as a Christian coach allows you to focus on whats important and what is RIGHT! My job is to help build legacies.... WOW!
